![]() It can be a tiny SMD Component or slightly larger power connector. The first step is to remove the part that is not working. These are the steps you have to follow, Step 1: Remove Defective Part While micro-soldering any electronic components, there are certain steps you will have to follow.Īssume that you are going to fix a broken power connector. While it is free to download and install the software, you have to pay an annual subscription to use it. It allows you to see which component is next without having to look at the drawings. The latest version of the software is ZXW 3.0. There are different micro-soldering software available in the market but the most popular one is ZXW Tools. You will use the multimeter only to test continuity, voltage, resistance, and capacitance. You can get a simple multimeter without any fancy setting. If you are repairing a logic board, then you definitely need a micro-soldering multimeter. Its shape resembles that of a screwdriver and it runs on electricity. Once the solder melts, it will form a joint and connect two workpieces. It uses nozzles of different sizes to direct air and distribute the heat evenly throughout the board.Ī micro soldering iron is what supplies heat to melt the solder. Stations in which you can use both don’t tend to work well.Ī hot air station uses heated air to heat the PCB board (or the solder on the board to be specific) that you will work on. If your rework station does not have a soldering pencil or a micro-tweezer, then you will have to buy them separately.Īlso, we recommend you get separate stations for using a soldering iron and a hot air gun. The camera will help you to take pictures and record videos for further examination.Ī rework station generally includes at least a soldering iron and hot air gun. A good micro soldering microscope should have 0.5x to 10x optical zoom.īesides, it should have an extended work distance and the ability to attach a camera. Only then, you will be able to know the extent of the problem. To achieve that level of precision, you should equip yourself with the right tools and equipment.īelow are some of the most commonly used micro soldering tools and equipment.įor any repair job, you have to first examine the workpiece physically and closely. Micro Soldering Tools and EquipmentĪs mentioned already, micro soldering requires more precision than conventional soldering. So, micro soldering is expected to play a crucial role in troubleshooting electronic devices and components in the future. With further technological advancements, their size will get reduced further. The advent of technology has led to a decrease in the size of electronic components. Similar to soldering, micro soldering also melts a filler material that joins two workpieces together. Micro soldering is the process of joining ultra-fine wires and microelectronic components using miniaturized equipment. ![]() Safety Precautions to Follow while Micro Soldering.Step 6: Examine the Board with a Microscope. ![]() Most people use maybe 2X as much solder as a joint actually needs and solder (especially lead bearing with lead prices rising over the past couple years) is more expensive than flux. Personally I prefer to add flux when not in a hurry, because it tends to make the joint at least as good if not better and because often people put more solder than necessary on a joint only because they had to apply that much to get enough flux on the joint. ![]() Whether the flux already in flux-bearing solder is good enough depends on the joint, how oxidized the metal is, and what % of flux is in the solder being used. It may be more trouble than it's worth to bother with this though, considering the cost of the projects and that a bottle of liquid flux is under $10 and lasts a long time if used sparingly. Paste solder can still be used for swipe soldering, you typically just need to make a swipe-pass one time to flow the flux then a second time with extra solder tinning the tip to solder the part down. You're best off just using it as-is, apply it with a soldering pick if necessary and let the heat of the iron melt and spread it as was intended, or of course buy some liquid flux instead. Gasoline or other petroleum solvents should work, but have too much evaporative fuming and are flammable. Alcohol will not dissolve the petroleum base used in typical paste flux. Liquid flux (ignoring the newer acid/water based type) is rosin dissolved in alcohol.
